You may have seen the commercials for USA Family Protection selling life insurance for less than a dollar a day. This rate does not apply to anyone though, regardless of how it is advertised. If you look at the fine print, you will notice that this rate is only for a healthy, non-smoking female at age 50 with only $10,000 in coverage. So what about the rest of us? USA Family Protection life insurance is actually provided by a company called Lumico Insurance but the rabbit hole does not stop there. We will dive into their policies and learn the truth about the “less than $1 a day” policy premiums for USA Family Protection life insurance

History of USA Family Protection and Lumico Insurance

Swiss Re headquarters owners of Lumico and USA Family Protection

While USA Family Protection may seem like an all-American company that sells life insurance, they are actually under the Swiss fortune 500 company Swiss Re. Swiss Re owns the company IptiQ which is headed by Niels Keuker who is also the owner of USA Family Protection and Lumico Insurance. Swiss Re is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, and has a global presence with companies and subsidiaries around the world. Swiss Re has been around since the 1800s but USA Family Protection and Lumico Insurance are both only 6 years old

Coverage Options with Lumico Insurance under USA Family Protection

Lumico Whole Life Insurance

USA Family Protection offers whole life insurance through Lumico Life Insurance. The age of coverage ranges from 18-70 with a minimum face amount of $30,000. However, once you hit 65 years of age, you are only eligible for a maximum face amount of $250,000. If you were to buy a policy earlier in life, you are eligible for a maximum amount of $1,000,000. If you manage to live until you are 121, you will be paid the amount of your face policy. Premiums are guaranteed for the life of your policy so you will not have to worry about your monthly premium changing.

Lumico Final Expense

USA Family Protection Final Expense Insurance is offered through Lumico Life insurance. Lumico offers three tiers for their final expense insurance; Preferred, Standard, and Modified. If you meet their strict underwriting requirements and are between the ages of 50-80, you may qualify for their Preferred Plan. The preferred plan has different maximum face amounts depending on your age that decrease as you get older. If you are between the ages of 76-80 under their preferred plan you only are eligible for a maximum face amount of $20,000. Next, the Standard policy is available to those who are between the ages of 50-85. Those who qualify for Lumico Life Insurance Standard policy only qualify for a maximum face amount of $30,000 regardless of age.

For folks with pre existing conditions and are between the ages of 50-80, you only qualify for the Modified Plan. The maximum face amount for Lumico Life Insurance’s Modified policy is only $15,000. Be wary that some of their final expense policies have a graded death benefit, so if you or a loved one should pass within the first three years of your policy, you will not receive the total amount of death benefit of your policy. Regardless of which policy you qualify for the minimum face amount value available under Lumico Final Expense Insurance is $5,000.

Lumico Life Insurance Riders

Both the final expense policies and whole life policies under Lumico Life Insurance come with riders. Each policy has the Accelerated Death Rider which is an add-on that allows you to access your death benefit before you die if you are diagnosed with a qualified terminal illness. Lumico Life Insurance also has optional riders you can select from. Each has the optional Accidental Death rider, which is when your beneficiary is entitled to your entire death benefit should you pass from an accident such as a car or workplace accident. Lumico’s whole Life insurance has the option to add an additional rider, the Dependent Child Rider. This rider covers all of your minor children’s dependents with a portion of the death benefit should you pass.

Other Available Options Through Lumico Insurance

Lumico Insurance does have other insurance coverage options besides the ones they offer with USA Family protection. These coverages include expanded Medicare coverage, accidental death insurance, and term life insurance.

Lumico Protection Now Term

Lumico Life Insurance offers term life insurance called “Protection Now”. Like with most term life insurance, the policy is available for 10, 15, and 20-year terms. The major difference between Lumico Term Life Insurance and other life insurance is that you can only get 30-year term insurance if you are under the age of 50. Regardless of age and health, the minimum face amount you can get is $25,000. Depending on your risk level, you may be entitled to different amounts of coverage. Risk is measured by the underwriting requirements and your age. Coverage options range from Platinum to Bronze.

Bronze and “Silver-tobacco” are the same amount where regardless of age where you are entitled to a maximum face amount of $100,000. If you qualify for Silver coverage but do not smoke, you are eligible for a maximum face amount of $250,000. The Gold and Platinum level policies’ maximum face amount differs depending on your age. If you are over 65, the maximum face amount for each is $250,000. If you are younger then you are eligible for a maximum face amount of $1,000,000 for Platinum and $500,000 for Gold.

Lumico Accidental Death Insurance

If you do not wish to get life insurance but are interested in a safety net, Lumico Insurance offers Accidental Death Insurance. This policy would only cover you should you pass as a result of the accident. This can be an immediate passing or passing due to accidental bodily injury caused within 180 days after the accident date. Lumico will not pay out this death benefit should you pass from other reasons like a medical condition or if your passing is not independent of other causes. The minimum face amount for this policy is $100,000 and the maximum you would be eligible for is $250,000. Lumico Accidental Death Insurance is only available for adults under the age of 60 and has no additional riders that are applicable.

USA Family Protection & Lumico

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No Medical Exams
Similar to other final expense insurance, Lumico Life Insurance offers only a health questionnaire and no medical exam. They guarantee quick acceptance of their policies.
  • Several Rider Options
Lumico Life Insurance offers many riders at an additional cost with their whole life and final expense insurance. There is also the Accelerated Death Benefit that is included with your life insurance policy at no additional cost.

Cons

  • Strict Underwriting Requirements
The harsh underwriting requirements for Lumico Insurance prevent many people from getting a good death benefit for simple health issues. If you are not getting insurance before 60 or have any pre existing condition then you can find a better rate elsewhere.
  • High Number of Complaint
When digging into USA Family Protection Insurance and Lumico Insurance, we realized that it is all owned by one person under a fortune 500 company means getting terrible customer service. While Lumico Life Insurance may be stable financially, its terrible NAIC score shows a high volume of customer complaints for a company its size.
  • USA Family Protection Outsources Insurance
The insurance you’re getting from USA Family Protection is actually either from IptiQ/Lumico or another insurance agency. Usually, insurance companies will practice reinsurance to minimize financial risk but leaves customers in a gray area as to who they are exactly insured under. This goes for all of USA Family Protection, your home, auto, rental, and life insurance would be under another party of insurers and would not actually get anything offered from USA Family Protection in general.

Ratings for Credit and Customer Service Satisfaction

AM Best Rating

AM Best can best be described as a rating agency focused on the creditworthiness of insurance companies worldwide. Their grading system is similar to the education system where they go from A+ to F. They measure the likelihood of a company defaulting on its financial obligations to its consumers. Lumico received an A+ rating showing its financial stability and ability to keep its financial obligations.

JD Power Rating

JD Power uses data and AI (artificial intelligence) to understand complex consumer behavior. They are committed to providing unbiased information and embody the highest ethical and professional standards. Unfortunately, neither Lumico Insurance nor USA Family Protection was selected as being amongst the top 21 providers of life insurance so they were not ranked by JD Power.

NAIC Rating

The National Association of Insurance Commission (NAIC) provides expertise, data, and analysis for all insurance companies and insurance commissioners. They regulate the insurance industry and protect consumers by collecting complaints and financial data.  The Company Complaint Index is determined by diving the company’s share of complaints in the U.S. market by the company’s share of premiums within the US market.

Lumico Insurance company has an overall complaint index rating of 2.50 which is twice as high as expected within the insurance market. The complaint index for their life insurance alone was 8.28 which is over eight times the national average of complaints. This is a firm indication that Lumico Life Insurance customer service does not provide its customers with a great overall experience.

USA Family Protection Reviews & Lumico Reviews:

I have no stars to give. Lumico has been completely uncooperative, and definitely not empathetic concerning my loved ones insurance policy. They appear to be scammers, hang up In your ear and prolong policy payouts purposely. This has caused a great deal of grief, and as a result led to other family passing over grieving along with the additional stress that lumico has caused. The things that theyve done to my family is against the law. I know that my deceased loved one is NOT PLEASED, MY FAMILY IS DEFINITELY NOT!

The company told me I could make payments on certain dates and went back on their word and canceled my life insurance policy after I paid hundreds of dollars in payments. They issued me a measly check and then canceled it because they were going to work with me. They never worked with me, suspended my policy, and are going to issue me another measly check.

I was lied to by the ins agent that signed me up for a life ins policy. I did file a complaint with the company. After reading all the bad reviews I'm going to cancel the policy tomorrow. I'm keeping my AIG policy. At least they are a reputable company. Like the old saying goes if it sounds too good to be true it prob is. Hope it works. I read a nightmare story about trying to cancel too.
