What Is The American Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas?

The American Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas can trace its roots to 1910. It was founded as the Amicable Life Insurance Company (ALICO), located in Waco, Texas. Their 22-story office was completed in 1911 and was designated a historic place in 2012.

Still the tallest standing building in the city, the ALICO building remains an icon in the Waco skyline.

ALICO and the American Life Insurance Company merged in 1965 to form the American Amicable Life Insurance Company, creating a local, home-grown staple American life insurer. The company was acquired in 2010 by the Canadian insurer Industrial Alliance and Financial Services, Inc.

This acquisition brought even more financial backing and trustworthiness to American Amicable, which was named by Forbes as one of their top life insurance providers for 2025.

American Amicable Life Insurance Coverage Options

American Amicable offers a wide range of life insurance options. Their Senior Choice final expense insurance stands out as a strong, simple choice for seniors.

1

American Amicable Final Expense Insurance

Also called burial insurance, final expense insurance is whole life insurance designed for seniors. Offering benefit payouts perfect for covering end-of-life expenses like funeral and burial plot costs, final expense insurance is a low-cost way for seniors to secure coverage tailored to their needs.

American Amicable offers a selection of final expense plans called Senior Choice.

Like all final expense insurance, American Amicable Senior Choice policies provide premium rates locked at the policy’s start, cash value growth, and life insurance riders for extra coverage. Offering death benefits payouts that range from $2,500 to $50,000, Senior Choice is available to applicants ages 50 through 85.

American Amicable offers three Senior Choice policies, but only one has no waiting period: the Senior Choice Immediate plan.

Available at the lowest rates of any Senior Choice plan, Senior Choice Immediate doesn’t require applicants to take medical exams. However, they must be in good health per the application’s health questionnaire. As with most final expense insurance, this policy’s underwriting guidelines are forgiving of many health concerns. Smokers may qualify if they are otherwise healthy.

2

American Amicable Guaranteed Issue & Graded Life Insurance

American Amicable offers two Senior Choice policies designed for seniors with pre-existing conditions: Senior Choice Graded and Senior Choice Return-of-Premium (ROP). Because these policies accept most applicants regardless of health concerns, they both require a two-year waiting period. If the policyholder dies during this waiting period, death benefits may be paid in a modified structure that could delay or reduce payouts.

Here’s more information about these policies:

  • Senior Choice Graded
A middle ground between the Senior Choice Immediate and ROP plans, Senior Choice Graded accepts applicants in poor health. It’s a good choice for seniors with hard-to-manage pre-existing medical conditions like COPD or diabetes. However, rates are pricier than the immediate policy.
  • Senior Choice Return-of-Premium (ROP)
The ROP policy is a simplified-issue policy that accepts applicants at a near-guaranteed rate, regardless of medical condition. After the waiting period, beneficiaries can receive the policy’s =death benefit plus the total value of paid premiums with 10% interest. ROP charges the highest monthly premium rate of the Senior Choice final expense policies.

3

American Amicable Term Life Insurance

Young adults and workers with hazardous occupations typically use term life insurance to replace income in case of death. While term life is usually less expensive than whole life for younger applicants, that’s often not the case for seniors.

And with stricter underwriting requirements, seniors may not qualify for term life plans anyway. It’s typically not the best fit, because seniors risk outliving their policy. Term life rates tend to get quite high for seniors, so we recommend they try whole life insurance.

American Amicable term life insurance benefits range from $25,000 to $250,000 in 10, 15, 20, and 30-year terms. When terms end, policyholders can renew American Amicable term life coverage with a new rate until age 95.

4

American Amicable Universal Life Insurance

Similar to whole life insurance, universal life insurance covers for life, but with more cash value flexibility. Cash value accumulated on universal life policies increases in various investment accounts, allowing these policies to gain considerable value.

However, with that extra flexibility comes complexity. While that cash value can be used to adjust premium rates and benefit payouts, these plans may be too complicated for seniors, who typically want reliable, simple, and easy-to-manage plans and payouts. Plus, universal life insurance plans normally have intense underwriting requirements that may exclude seniors from coverage.

American Amicable’s universal life insurance policies are industry-standard. Like American Amicable’s other permanent life insurance options, they offer more relaxed underwriting than competitor plans, but it’s better for most seniors to get final expense insurance instead.

Other American Amicable Life Insurance Benefits

In addition to their quality final expense options, American Amicable offers life insurance riders and specialized plans

1

American Amicable Specialized Life Insurance Policies

American Amicable offers two specialized life insurance plans that function slightly differently from their standard policies: Home Protector and Financial Lifeline.

Home Protector is a mortgage protection term policy with 15, 20, 25, and 30-year terms. To be eligible, applicants must be paying for an active mortgage. This policy has lower premium rates than other American Amicable term life plans.

A modified whole life policy, Financial Lifeline pays a portion of paid premiums into a tax-deferred annuity account that will pay alongside the death benefit. This annuity accrues value faster than other whole life policies, providing a larger payout.

2

American Amicable Life Insurance Riders

Life insurance riders provide optional extra coverage to policies, typically at an additional cost. They’re good for those with intricate health or budget requirements. American Amicable offers several riders, and some are included in their policies at no extra cost. American Amicable Life Insurance riders include:

  • Critical Illness Rider
Pays the full death benefit if the policyholder is diagnosed with a critical medical condition with limited life expectancy.

  • Disability Income Rider
Waives premium charges to protect income if the policyholder becomes permanently disabled.
  • Terminal Illness Rider
Pays a portion of the death benefit early if the policyholder is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
  • Children’s / Grandchildren’s Insurance Agreement Rider
Covers children with a term policy that can later be converted into a permanent policy.
  • Accidental Death Rider
Included at no extra cost with each of American Amicable’s Senior Choice final expense policies. This rider pays an additional death benefit if the policyholder dies in an accident.

How Much Does American Amicable Life Insurance Cost?

American Amicable final expense insurance rates are competitive with some of the best providers on the market, like Mutual of Omaha and Aetna Accendo. American Amicable’s policies offer an extensive list of riders for extra coverage, giving them significant versatility.

Dealing with multiple insurance companies I’ve found that American Amicable is one of the easiest and smoothest carriers to deal with on a regular basis. Highly Recommend working with them.

5/5

I’ve held policies now with 4 different companies and American Amicable was by far the easiest, fastest and most respectful of them all. I called to cancel a policy with them once and their response was “yes sir. That is cancelled effective immediately and we will be here when you return” which I did return after a horrible experience with Lumico. American Amicable’s customer service is legendary and I’ve seen how they take care of families. I’m a customer for life or until I find someone as good as these guys which has proven to be quite the challenge so far.

Final Thoughts

American Amicable is a strong choice for seniors and smokers thanks to their forgiving underwriting practices. Based on the American Amicable reviews, their policies are much less expensive for smokers than other providers, and occasional smokers are often eligible for non-tobacco rates.

American Amicable final expense insurance is competitive with other providers, even for non-smokers. Their immediate benefit plan is a standout because it doesn’t require a medical exam and offers immediate coverage.
